2006-04-11 - Female Paramedics Kickboxing PROFESSIONAL PARAMEDIC ASSOCIATION OF OTTAWA MEDIA RELEASE Female paramedics make kick-boxing championships Tues, Apr 11, 2006 Ottawa – Ottawa Paramedics Cathie Tessier and Mary Beth Stanistreet have recently competed for and won the opportunity to represent Canada as part of the National Kickboxing Team at the WKF (World Kickboxing Federation) Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from April 26th to April 30th. Stanistreet is no stranger to competition at the world stage. She competed in the Intercontinental Kickboxing Championships in South Africa last year and was crowned World Champion in her category. In addition to working as full time Paramedics and performing a wealth of volunteer work in the community, both Tessier and Stanistreet have been following a demanding training regime in preparation for this event. It light of all her hard work and dedication, Stanistreet says that “It is hard to imagine how exciting this experience is going to be for us. This is definitely a chance of a lifetime.” However, this chance of a lifetime comes at a significant cost because amateur athletes do not receive any funding. Together, these paramedics will have to pay just over $6000 to compete at the world championships and this doesn’t even include associated costs such as equipment, training camps, nutrition or coaching. “One way or the other we will find a way to make it work”, says Stanistreet. “The important thing is showcasing the strength of Canadian women and Paramedics on the world stage”.
