2006-10-21 - Student & Media Defib Certification MEDIA RELEASE Student & Media Defib Certification Saturday October 21, 2006 Ottawa - The Professional Paramedic Association of Ottawa would like to invite media personalities to earn Advanced CPR and Defibrillation certification with the class of 2008 Paramedic students on Saturday October 21st from 0900hrs - 1200hrs. We will have fully certified Advanced Care Paramedics and Primary Care Paramedics on hand to teach these very important skills. This rapid training program is the first of its kind being offered by paramedics. "Within 4 hours, you can be as comfortable performing CPR and using a defibrillator as you are dialing 9-1-1", said Darryl Wilton, President of the Professional Paramedic Association of Ottawa. When asked about why this new rapid Advanced CPR and Defibrillation training was being started, Wilton remarked, "Paramedics want people of all ages to realize they can make an enormous difference by sacraficing a very small amount of their time." Students who take the Primary Care Paramedic Program must learn these life saving skills at the very beginning of their course which gives them the same medical qualifications as professional Police Officers or Fire Fighters. The students then spend the next 2 years in what is recognized as one of the most difficult and intense post secondary courses, the Primary Care Paramedic program. "Calling 9-1-1, performing CPR and applying a defibrillator are the first 3 steps in the Chain of Survival", says Advanced Care Paramedic Rob Wilson, "and it only takes 4 hours to learn how to apply these life saving skills". The fourth and last step involves advanced cardiac life support which is only available from highly trained Primary and Advanced Care Paramedics. Beginning in 2007, the paramedic association will also expand this same CPR and Defib training to high school students across Ottawa. - 30 - Media, camera and interview opportunities will be available.
