2006-11-09 - Paramedics Earn Car Seat Tech Cert MEDIA RELEASE Car Seat Technician Training Saturday November 11 & Sunday November 12, 2006 Ottawa - In response to new Ontario Highway Traffic Act laws regarding child seats, boosters and maximum number of occupants in motor vehicles, local Paramedics will be volunteering their time to earn Car Seat Technician certifications this upcoming weekend. The Professional Paramedic Association of Ottawa (PPAO) would like to invite media personalities to attend our training sessions. Beginning in 2004, the PPAO embarked on a volunteer initiative that included the City of Ottawa Public Health Department, Transport Canada, Plan-It-Safe and the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in an effort to ensure that Car Seat Inspections would continue to be available to the public at large. It has taken 2 years to raise the funds that are necessary to train this many inspectors. "It is important to provide this valuable public service because paramedics see first hand the devastating consequences when people don't secure their children properly", said Patrick Lamoureux, Director of Car Seat Inspections for the Professional Paramedic Association of Ottawa, "children who are ejected from vehicles during collisions are at very high risk of suffering serious injury or death". Over the next 4 weeks, the paramedic association will certify over 60 paramedics and numerous community members. These people will all volunteer their time to provide hundreds of free car seat inspections throughout the year in the City of Ottawa. "All paramedic and community Certified Car Seat Technicians will be learning much more about cars, restraints, children and collisions than you might imagine. Securing your child properly has been proven to reduce the risk of injury dramatically in serious motor vehicle collisions", says Lamoureux. - 30 - Media, camera and interview opportunities will be available.
