PARAMEDICS OF THE FUTURE
Monday May 14, 2007

Ottawa – Take a city that is growing at an astonishing rate. Add in an enormous baby boomer segment that is aging every day. Faster cars. More aggressive sports. Hundreds of thousands of tourists and top it all off with a new strain of highly contagious diseases with no known cures.

You have only begun to discover some of the ingredients that are fuelling the need for “Paramedics of the Future”.

This year, the Professional Paramedic Association of Ottawa is celebrating National Paramedic Week with a focus on community youth who may be our “Paramedics of the Future”.

National Paramedic Week is celebrated across Canada every May to increase community awareness of the fact that today’s Paramedics are highly trained medical professionals who bring the emergency room to the patient.

From May 14th to May 17th , several groups of local Scouts and Girl Guides will be attending Paramedic Headquarters on Don Reid Drive from 18:30-20:30hrs to learn what it’s like to work as an Ottawa Paramedic.

“Ottawa youth have an extremely keen interest in the Paramedic field” says Paramedic Week Coordinator Rob Wilson. “Every day, kids approach us to ask intelligent, inquisitive questions about our job so this year we decided to focus our education efforts on them”.

Following an impressive multimedia information session on Paramedic roles and duties, each group will be able to try out some of our equipment and be taken on a guided tour of Paramedic Headquarters.

The media is invited to join us throughout National Paramedic Week and interview local Scouts and Girl Guides to see what they think about being a “Paramedic of the Future”.
